Payment for EUROS 2007

Dear all EUROS participants,
Payment via credit card for EUROS2007 is open now.

Basically, there are two phases to be completed until to your arrival at Istanbul.

1. Realizing Payment for Participation via Credit Card/ Money Transfer.
2. Filling a Participant Form for Debate and Organizational Matters.

Completing these two steps means you are welcomed to "Vehbi Koc European Universities Debating Championship, 2007".

1. The crucial point related to PHASE#1 is that all participants must be aware of the person who made the payment on behalf of them. That will not be a potential problem for those paying for their personal account. However, payments concerning more than one participant need to assign a "liable person" that we can contact with if any problem occurs. Those needed information (e-mail, phone number etc...) is indicated in payment form that can be reached with the link below.

http://www.eudc2007.com/odeme/

(This link can also be reached over the "registration" title on our web site)

Please do not send us any e-mails (just after paying) for informing us about names of the participants who are included in the payment if you paid via credit card. This issue will be resolved in PHASE#2.

2. PHASE#2 will begin in a week which will ask participants about both debate matters (team name, teammate and name of debaters/adjudicators...) and organizational matters such as dietary issues, accommodation matters and activity selections. This requirement has to be implemented until to 30th of June which will begin at the end of the first week of the June.

The important caution related to second phase is that every individual will be filling a blank asking the name of the "liable person". Therefore, the burden of proving your "done payment" will be eliminated in this way if you did not pay with your personal credit card.

For any problems related to payment, please do not hesitate to ask

Debate Sri Lanka Steps Up

A year back young university law students did Sri Lanka proud, "talking" their way right to the top, at the 5th Annual National Law School Parliamentary Debate Championship organized by the National Law School of India University. Now the schools debating of the southern part of the Indian subcontinent are also contributing the Sri Lankan Debating success

The Faculty of Law Moot Court and Debating Society, Sri Lanka recently hosted the largest Debating Championships for selecting the Sri Lankan National Schools' Debating team for WSDC 2007. The tournament was an ideal launch pad for preparation for future involvement in the area of “South Asian Debating”.

This is the second time the event was held, and it was a good experience for the students, as it was something quite new to most of them. The style of debating they used for the tournament was the WSDC format, and since most students get to usually debate under the prepared style of debating, this was good exposure for them. About 130 participants from over 25 schools has participated in the championships.
The competition had five preliminary rounds and all of the teams had to participate in each round. "The tournament functioned on a win point margin basis, and every team had to participate in all five rounds.

The Themes of the rounds were

1. International terrorism
2. Sri Lankan affairs
3. Climate change
4. God and science
5. Dangerous sports.

These themes were given to the contestants at a workshop that was held prior to the tournament.

Champion:
Bishop’s College, Team A.

Champion Team Members were:
Sandaruwani de Silva (16),
Keshia Pendigrast (17)
Thameena Zarani (16),

The Motion for the final debate was:
This house believes that the democratic ideal should extend to the US foreign policy.

Best Speaker of the Final:
Zara Cadar, Asian International School

Though the majority of the participating schools were from Colombo, the competition also saw a number of schools form Galle, Kandy and Negombo, proving the interest for debating, throughout Sri Lanka.

Pakistan National Under 17 Debating Championship

LAHORE College of Arts and Sciences (LACAS) won the Pakistan National Under-17 Debating Championship, with Lahore Grammar School (LGS) Defence branch coming in second place.

The topic of the final contest was “This House Wants to Curtail Freedom of Speech”.

LACAS opposed the topic while LGS proposed it. The contest was a close one, with judges split in favour of LACAS 4-1.

Abeer Tariq of LGS got best speaker of the tournament award while Palvashay Sethi of Headstart came second. The Debating Society of Pakistan arranged the contest.
The foundation for the Debating Society of Pakistan (DSP) was laid in 1992 with the formation of the Lahore-based English Spearking Union by Mr. Raziuddin Sheikh. Over the years, we have undergone various changes as we have grown, and are today the largest platform for parliamentary debate in Pakistan.

The DSP organizes three major national tournaments a year, in which more than 50 instituions from all over Pakistan take part. The three national tournaments are: a.. The Raziuddin Sheikh National Under-19 Debating Championship b.. The National Under-17 Debating Championship c.. The National Inter-Universities Debating Championship. In addition, the DSP holds workshops facilitated by debaters and judges with international experience to train upcoming debaters and judges.

At the concluding ceremony, Sonnu Rehman, Debating Society Pakistan president, highlighted the need for Pakistan to open its minds to discussion rather than promoting vandalism and violence. She also felt the need to promote debating and arrange training workshops for coaches.

The final contest was held at LGS 1-A/1 branch. Sunday’s event was big, with teams from Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Karachi taking part. Twenty-two teams participated in the tournament. Each team was made up of five members (three speaking members and two resource members). The tournament was stretched over three days and five rounds. They were 50 judges from Lahore, many of who were accomplished speakers themselves.

The teams that made it to the quarterfinals included Aitchison College A and B teams, LGS Defence A team, Karachi Grammar School, Headstart Islamabad, Beaconhouse canal campus, LGS Johar Town and LACAS. Out of these, the LACAS, LGS Johar Town, LGS Defence and Headstart made it into the semis. LACAS and LGS Defence made it to the finals, with LACAS triumphing.
